Jeffrey Campos, the former Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Denver leader who resigned last week following his arrest, was formally charged Wednesday with misdemeanor assault in an altercation with a female chamber member.
Charging documents filed in the case say Campos assaulted real estate broker Jennifer Reins, but do not provide details of the altercation.
Neither Reins nor Campos have returned calls from The Denver Post.
Reins, 33, owns Reins Realty in Denver and online directory records of the chamber list her as a member.
A police affidavit detailing the alleged crime was sealed by a judge at the request of police.
Prosecutors have labeled the case as domestic violence. Reins and Campos are not related.
Campos, 55, resigned Friday as president and chief executive of the state’s second-largest chamber organization. That happened days after the chamber board had placed him on paid administrative leave following his arrest July 21 on the assault charge as well as a felony kidnapping charge.
Prosecutors did not formally file the kidnapping charge and Campos, whom police served by summons yesterday, is to appear in Denver County court Sept. 2.
The chamber launched a search to replace Campos, who held the top spot since 2005. The board named former Denver mayoral candidate James Mejia to the job during the search. Mejia has said he is not seeking the post.
