An Evans man will spend the next several years back in prison for leaving his 18-month-old daughter in the bathtub where she was scalded with hot water.
Armando Marquez-Gonzalez, 28, had been out of prison for only three months in March when he was left at home to care for his daughter while her mother worked. He told police he left the bathroom to listen to music on his iPod in another room. Minutes later, he heard his child screaming.
In Weld District Court on Tuesday, the child’s mother and his parents said the incident was an accident. Because Marquez-Gonzalez had spent most of his time behind bars since he was 13, his family said he hadn’t had the right training to deal with children.
Weld District Court judge Thomas Quammen balked, sentencing him to eight years in prison. In April, Quammen also sentenced Shannon Johnson of Fort Lupton to 10 years in prison for leaving her 13-month-old son alone in the tub where he drowned while she played games on Facebook.
