The Colorado Governor’s Energy Office and Colorado State University today announced a joint agreement designed to implement mandatory energy-saving requirements for Colorado state government.
The mandatory requirements are designed to reduce government use of energy, water and paper.
The agreement was signed between the Governor’s Energy Office and CSU’s Center for Multiscale Modeling for Atmospheric Processes, a multi-institutional science and technology center at the university.
The environmental goals required by executive order for state government operations include a 10 percent reduction in water consumption by 2012; a 20 percent reduction in energy consumption by 2012; a 20 percent reduction in paper consumption by 2012 and a 25 percent reduction in petroleum use by the state fleet by 2012.
Scott Denning, a CSU atmospheric science professor who is managing the program, said that CSU will organize workshops and develop “fun and useful training” for people who will then take the message to Colorado’s 30,000 state employees why cutting energy is important.
CSU will work closely with the state’s Greening Government Council, which includes representatives from each executive agency in the state responsible for the energy-saving changes.
CSU researchers and students will work closely with the council on “cutting-edge research” related to state data on energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.Howard Pankratz: 303-954-1939 or hpankratz@denverpost.com.
