SÃO PAULO — The conviction of an Amazon rancher for ordering the killing of an American nun and rain-forest activist was upheld by a state court Tuesday.

A court in Para state ruled that Regivaldo Galvao must serve his 30-year sentence, though he can appeal that ruling. Galvao turned himself in to police, his lawyer said.

Dorothy Stang of Dayton, Ohio, worked for three decades to preserve the rain forest and defend the land rights of poor settlers. Her brother lives in Colorado.

Prosecutors said Galvao and another rancher ordered Stang’s killing because she was blocking them from illegally obtaining a parcel of land.
