BURLINGTON — Sparked by Coley David’s big plays at the beginning and end of the first half, defending Class 1A state champion Burlington furthered its current prowess in small schools.
David, a senior, returned a punt 84 yards for a touchdown early in the first quarter, then caught an 18-yard scoring pass on the final play of the first half Friday night as the Cougars easily handled rival Wray 34-8 in The Denver Post game of the week.
At a crowded Consbruck Field, the 1A nonleaguer, which also accounted for the state title game a year ago, drew interest from across the classification and was more one-sided than unusual. A year ago, the two teams split two games decided by a touchdown.
But on Friday, David spearheaded an experienced Cougars group (2-0) that won its 13th consecutive game and is ranked first in The Denver Post 1A media poll. The 5-foot-10, 150-pound senior also added two interceptions as Burlington took advantage of four turnovers by third-ranked Wray (1-1).
Cougars senior quarterback Stetson Corman was 9-of-15 for 143 yards and two touchdowns. David added four receptions for 77 yards.
Wray was held to 107 yards rushing.
