A Colorado Springs man accused in a brutal slaying over a $100 drug debt pleaded guilty Thursday rather than face an upcoming trial in which two of his three co-defendants were slated to testify against him.

Jason Bomsta, 34, agreed to serve a 54-year prison term under a plea deal with prosecutors.

Facing trial on charges of first-degree murder, Bomsta pleaded guilty Thursday to second-degree murder and second-degree kidnapping in the death of 40-year-old Duane Maasch, whose naked body was found June 15, 2010, in a child’s toy box beside Rampart Range Road three miles north of Garden of the Gods.

A judge will decide whether to accept the plea agreement at a sentencing scheduled for Sept. 26, the date Bomsta’s trial would have begun.
