A motorcycle officer with the Thornton Police Department was airlifted to the hospital Saturday morning, after he was rear-ended by a possible drunken driver on Interstate 25.
The officer, whose name has not been released, was traveling north on I-25 near 84th Avenue when he attempted to make a traffic stop, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
The officer had his lights flashing when he attempted to make contact with a vehicle in front of him about 8 a.m.
While he was attempting to make the traffic stop, a vehicle smashed into him from behind.
The officer was airlifted to Denver Health Medical Center with serious but not life-threatening injuries.
Fernando Malagon, 19, was arrested on charges of vehicular assault, Thornton police said. The State Patrol said alcohol may have played a role in the accident.
Northbound I-25 was closed for more than three hours at 84th Avenue, as Thornton police investigated the accident.
