GOLDEN — Colorado Mines quarterback Clay Garcia threw for 353 yards and five touchdowns Saturday, three TD tosses coming in the first half as the Orediggers (4-1, 3-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) built a 21-3 halftime lead en route to a 38-11 victory over Fort Lewis.
Garcia hooked up with Diamond Gillis from 16 yards out with 12 seconds left in the first quarter. Garcia also hit Matt Brown for a 16-yard TD and threw a 54-yard strike to Jerrod Doucet in the second quarter.
The Skyhawks (1-4, 0-3) cut the Orediggers’ lead to 21-11 early in the third quarter when Tim Jenkins found Van Gramman for a 7-yard touchdown pass. But Garcia capped a 12-play, 67-yard drive with a 6-yard TD pass to Brown for a 28-11 lead. Garcia’s final TD toss went to Dan Palmer from 7 yards out in the fourth quarter.
The Mines’ defense limited the Skyhawks to 19 yards rushing on 12 attempts. Brown had 91 yards on eight receptions for the Orediggers, and David Pawelek added 102 yards on six catches.
CSU-Pueblo 38, Chadron State 28
CHADRON, Neb. — ThunderWolves quarterback Ross Dausin was almost perfect, going 18-of-20 for 272 yards and two touchdowns, the final scoring strike a 7-yard pass to Da’Quan Cartwright that gave CSU-Pueblo (5-0, 3-0 RMAC) a 38-21 lead early in the fourth quarter.
Western New Mexico 33, Colorado Mesa 21
GRAND JUNCTION — Abraham Macias rushed for 153 yards and one touchdown, providing a lot of the horsepower for the winning Mustangs (3-2, 2-1 RMAC).
Jake Cimolino rushed 14 times for 97 yards for the Mavericks (1-4, 0-3).
Nebraska-Kearney 37, Adams State 13
ALAMOSA — The Grizzlies (2-3, 0-3 RMAC) turned the ball over five times, including three interceptions thrown by Trevor Eggleston, and the Antelopes (5-0, 3-0) rolled.
Western State 15, N.M. Highlands 14
GUNNISON — Lloyd Tucker kicked five field goals, the last a 27-yarder with only one second on the clock to give the Mountaineers (1-4, 1-2 RMAC) the home win.
