A fire in the Western Forge factory late Sunday night sent a large plume of smoke into the air affecting visibility at Garden of the Gods Road and Chestnut Street.
Fire crews broke into the factory, a tool manufacturer at 4607 Forge Rd., and found the building filled with smoke but had trouble locating the fire, according to fire department updates on Twitter.
After two hours of searching, a fire was found in a oil pit that is used to cool newly made tools. Crews were forced to evacuate before the fire was put out because of the presence of hazardous materials.
The fire burned out eventually, according to Twitter updates. It is not clear if the blaze died on its own or if firefighters were able to re-enter the building and put it out.
