One teenager was killed and two others critically injured in a two-car collision today in Elbert County.
A 17-year-old boy from Elizabeth was killed. A 16-year girl from Elizabeth was airlifted to Swedish Medical Center and an 18-year-old man from Kiowa was taken to Littleton Adventist Hospital with serious injuries, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
Shortly after 2 p.m., emergency crews were called to Elbert County Road 154 off Colorado Highway 86, after a 1996 Buick Century and a Jeep collided, the state patrol said.
Troopers arrived on scene and found one person dead and others trapped inside one of the vehicles. The Jeep, which was headed north on County Road 154, hit the Buick as it pulled out into the road at the intersection of County Road 21. The Jeep did not have a stop sign.
The three teenagers were in the Buick. The driver of the Jeep, a 19-year-old woman from Elizabeth, was transported to Parker Adventist Hospital with minor injuries.
Investigators do not suspect any alcohol or drugs but are still investigating seat belt use as well as why the Buick proceeded into the intersection, State Trooper Heather Cobler said.
In a statement on 9News and other television station, Elizabeth High Schoool principal Greg Wieman said: “This is a tragedy for these families that is shared by the students, faculty, staff, and community of Elizabeth.”
There will be classes at the school on Wednesday, but a crisis center is being set up in the library.
