A rare, two-story horse-drawn wagon, featured in parades across Colorado, was destroyed in a barn fire near Windsor today.
At 7:12 a.m., crews were called to the barn, near the intersection of Colorado Highway 392 and Weld County Road 21, said Chief Herb Brady, spokesman for the Windsor Severance Fire Protection District.
Initial reports indicated that there were several horses inside the barn, located about three miles east of Windsor, but all of the horses were found safe in a corral.
The barn was fully involved in flames when crews arrived. The blaze was contained, but the barn and everything inside it is a total loss, Brady said.
At least one tractor and 100 tons of hay burned inside the barn.
“There was a lot of stuff in there,” said Darin Henry who rents the property and owns everything inside the barn.
The antique wagon was one of a kind, with a heavy metal frame and wooden siding, Henry said. It stood two-stories tall and was designed to hold and carry a band during parades and other events. It is one of several wagons Henry shows and took at least three horses to pull.
“It just can’t be replaced, it’s one of those things,” Henry said.
No injuries were reported.
More than 20 firefighters responded to the blaze.
The cause and origin of the fire is still under investigation.
