PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — One of Haiti’s most prominent health experts says the country’s cholera outbreak is now the worst in the world. Dr. Paul Farmer said cholera has sickened more than 450,000 people and killed more than 6,000. Farmer says it is on the verge of becoming the leading cause of death by infectious disease in Haiti.

He said Tuesday that cholera is likely to be in Haiti for at least three more years. There was no cholera before the start of the outbreak last year. Evidence suggests the disease was inadvertently brought into Haiti by U.N. peacekeeping troops and spread because of poor sanitation.
