About 40 offenders were involved in a physical fight at the Sterling Correctional Facility this morning.
The fight started at 9:17 a.m., and the facility remains on lock-down status this afternoon, said Katherine Sanguinetti, spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Corrections.
The fight broke out in the commons area of Unit One, which is surrounded by cells, Sanguinetti said. There are 290 offenders housed in the unit.
Seven staff members were on duty in the unit when the fight broke out.
Staff was able to break up the fight within minutes of it starting. A few offenders were treated for minor injuries by medical staff at the prison, and one staff member was taken to the Regional Medical Center for minor injuries.
What caused the fight is still under investigation.
