Vail residents have been given the all-clear to drink their water after a rollover this afternoon on Interstate 70 appeared to have contaminated Black Gore Creek this afternoon.
A spokeswoman for Eagle River Water & Sanitation District said tests showed the spill did not reach the drinking water supply.
Westboard lanes of I-70 were closed but reopened about 8:15 p.m.
A semi-trailer truck turned over on a runaway truck ramp near Big Horn Road about 1 p.m. and dropped several individual containers of methanol, a flammable solvent used in a wide variety of products and industrial processes.
“We know that several of the containers have leaks, but we don’t know how much of it leaked or whether it reached the waterway,” said Colorado State Trooper Heather Cobler said at about 4:30 p.m.
The highway department detoured traffic onto Colorado Highway 91 at Copper Mountain onto U.S. Highway 24 in Leadville,
