DENVER—Low-income residents can begin applying for assistance with their home heating bills, but the requirements will be tougher this year.

The Low-income Energy Assistance Program began accepting applications Tuesday.

The program pays the highest benefits to those with the highest heating bills and lowest incomes by family size.

Program director Todd Jorgensen says under the new guidelines, a family of four must earn less than $2,800 per month to qualify. Previously that amount was $3,400.
