CORVALLIS, Ore. — Fourth-ranked Stanford was wary of Oregon State, and a slow start against the Beavers on Saturday gave the Cardinal even more reason for concern.

After a thrilling triple-overtime victory against USC and the big Pac-12 North contest looming against No. 6 Oregon next weekend, the lowly Beavers mounted a threat when they closed to within 17-13 in the third quarter.

But then Stanford did what Stanford does, pulling away for a 38-13 victory on Saturday and extending the nation’s longest winning streak to 17 games.

“I think we have a mature football team,” Cardinal quarterback Andrew Luck said. “We understood it could be a trap game sandwiched between two great teams, but I think our football team is mature enough to understand that if we don’t win this game the rest of the games don’t matter.”

The win came at a price for Stanford, who lost senior receiver Chris Owusu to a concussion in the second quarter after a helmet-to-helmet collision with Beavers cornerback Jordan Poyer. Owusu was taken from the field by ambulance.

PASADENA, Calif. — Derrick Coleman scored the go-ahead touchdown for UCLA on a 1-yard run with 49 seconds to play, and ASU’s Alex Garoutte missed a 46-yard field goal attempt as time expired.

Coleman’s dive capped a perilous 79-yard drive featuring a fumble by Coleman, an offensive pass-interference penalty and a third-and-29 conversion by the Bruins, who improbably moved into first place in the Pac-12 South for the first time since early last season.

Brock Osweiler passed for 264 yards and moved the Sun Devils 47 yards in 38 seconds to set up Garoutte’s final attempt, but the freshman pushed it wide right — his second miss of the half.

Osweiler rallied Arizona State from a nine-point deficit in the second half, capping a 93-yard drive with a 1-yard TD dive with 7:48 left.

SAN FRANCISCO — Embattled California quarterback Zach Maynard threw for 118 yards and a touchdown before leaving with an injury, Isi Sofele ran for 138 yards and a TD and California moved within one victory of becoming bowl-eligible.

Maynard, who had thrown seven interceptions in his previous three games, hit Anthony Miller for a 19-yard touchdown pass on the first series of the game by the Golden Bears, who made a statement in their next-to-last game at temporary home AT&T Park.

TUCSON — Arizona, needing to win its final four games to become bowl-eligible, fell flat.
