Surveys show that the price of a gallon of gas is in retreat, tumbling 5 cents nationally in the past week and 4 cents in Denver.

Over the previous week, the average price for a regular gallon of gas in Denver fell from $3.41 to $3.37, AAA reported Thursday.

The price is down 13 cents a gallon over the past month, according to the motor club.

Today, the Lundberg Survey of fuel prices put the national average price of a gallon of regular at a nearly identical $3.38.

This time a year ago, the price in Denver was $2.66.

The Denver price is standard up and down the Front Range, but prices climb in the mountain to among the highest prices in the country.

A gallon of gas costs $3.86 in Vail and $3.85 in Glenwood Springs, prices that have held steady since September, according to the AAA’s report.

Of the cities Lundberg surveyed, San Francisco had the highest at $3.78.

Albuquerque, N.M., had the nation’s lowest average price for gas at $2.96.
