STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Fierce wind gusts caused havoc in and around Steamboat Springs on Thursday morning.

Steamboat Ski Area was closed throughout the day because of strong winds. The ski area reported a gust of 123 mph early Thursday.

Ski Area spokesman Mike Lane said the winds picked up around midnight, and at 6:10 a.m., Tower 30 at the top of the gondola lift registered a gust of 100 mph. One hour later, it measured the peak gust of 123 mph.

Elsewhere, a section of roof blew off the Spring Creek Meadows condominium building off Walton Creek Road.

A portion of the roof blew into a neighboring condo complex, smashing several windows.
