The Federal Aviation Administration said Sunday afternoon that all four people aboard a single-engine plane were killed in a crash Saturday afternoon in San Juan County.

Their names and hometowns have not been released. Only one of the bodies has been recovered, but a mile-long debris field for the Socata TB-21, a light aircraft, left no hope for survivors, said FAA spokesman Mike Fergus.

The cause is under investigation.

Crews were hampered Sunday by heavy snow on the terrain, about a mile and quarter north of Silverton, followed by more heavy snow overnight that obscured the site, he said.

The plane was flying from Durango to Aspen, according to San Juan County authorities.

The four-seat plane took off at about 1:30 p.m., and 41 minutes later the aircraft’s emergency beacon signal was detected near Silverton, about 48 miles north.

Saturday evening, searchers had to give up the effort because of heavy snow. The Denver Post
