Denver’s independent monitor, Richard Rosenthal, told the mayor’s office Tuesday night that he has accepted a new job and will resign, according to Amber Miller, city spokeswoman.

Rosenthal could not be reached for comment Tuesday, but on Monday he declined to comment on new employment opportunities.

Rosenthal reviews investigations into alleged wrongdoing by police and sheriff’s deputies. He came to Denver from Portland, Ore. in 2005.

Since then, the city has put in place a new discipline system that replaced one that largely relied on past discipline decisions to guide punishment for misbehaving officers. The new system has resulted in 10 terminations since March.

Next week, the city’s new police chief, Robert White, is scheduled to start.

This article has been corrected in this online archive. Rosenthal was not a member of Mayor Michael Hancock’s cabinet, and he came from Portland, Oregon not Los Angeles.
