A 61-year-old Garfield County construction company owner was arrested Monday night ending a three-hour standoff after he allegedly fired shots at a sheriff’s deputy who had been asked to check on him.

Craig Dance was booked into the Garfield County Jail, and a sheriff’s spokeswoman said charges would be announced today.

Dance barricaded himself in his home after the shots were fired at the deputy just after 4 p.m. in the Westbank Ranch subdivision along the Roaring Fork River south of Glenwood Springs.

Negotiators reached him by phone and talked him into surrendering about 7:30 p.m., according to the sheriff’s department.

In the meantime, residents in a three-block radius were told to stay in their homes away from windows.

“I’m thankful no one was hurt and for the quick response from all responding law enforcement agencies,” Sheriff Lou Vallario stated in a media release.

“I have a great deal of confidence in the decision-making of my deputies in these situations. Because of our commitment to training and equipment, we can safely work toward a peaceful resolution.”

Public records show Dance operates a construction business out of his home on Westbank Road.

He has been arrested twice for driving under the influence of alcohol in Garfield County, including pleading guilty to the charge in June. He was sentenced to 12 days in jail, given a one-year suspended sentence and placed on two years probation, court records show.
