LAKEWOOD, Colo.—A man who authorities say opened fire on Lakewood police responding to a domestic violence call has been sentenced to 180 years in prison.
Thirty-four-year-old David Thomas Orton was sentenced Monday afternoon. A jury on Nov. 18 convicted Orton of 84 counts, including six counts of attempted first-degree murder, stemming from a four-hour standoff.
Police say Orton began firing on officers who responded to his home on Jan. 7. Officers say Orton at one point was lying prone on his stomach and aiming at the muzzle flashes of police officers who were firing back.
Authorities say up to 13 police officers were drawing fire in the area before police wounded Orton.
Three children, ages 4, 2, and 5-months were found safe in a bedroom after the standoff ended.
