Freewave, a Boulder-based maker of high performance radios, has won a contract with Mexico’s national utility company, according to a Freewave statement.
The Comision Federal de Electricidad or CFE selected Freewave to provide data transmission for a smart grid project the utility is developing.
CFE Mexico’s sole electric power utility, generates, transmits and distributes power and energy to nearly 100 million customers.
The Mexican utility is now using Freewave radios an wireless data radios, the Boulder company said.
“Before implementing FreeWave radios, CFE was experiencing difficulties due to distance and maintaining line of site in its communication networks,” Federico Ibarra Otero, an engineer with Ampere, FreeWave’s partner Mexico, said in a statement.
The smart grid adds two-way data and communication capabilities to the electric transmission grid enabling utilities to better manage load and identify problems.
“The success with CFE confirms that our wireless solutions are making progress across the globe in the smart grid market,” Ashish Sharma, Freewave’s chief marketing officer, said in a statement.
The value of the CFE contract was not disclosed.
