FRISCO, Colo.—A technique that law-enforcement agencies have used to control the flow of weekend mountain traffic on Interstate 70 is back.

On two earlier dates this year, police and Colorado State Patrol cars drove between 45 and 55 mph with their emergency lights flashing to pace traffic. The Colorado Department of Transportation says the “rolling speed harmonization” tactic created more uniform vehicle speeds, helping to improve safety, reduce crashes and improve traffic flow.

CDOT says the pace cars will return Sunday to help control traffic flows on eastbound I-70 between Silverthorne and Floyd Hill. They’re scheduled to be used again Jan. 1 and on Sundays or Mondays throughout ski season.

CDOT supports the program by paying 24 off-duty officers overtime at a cost of about $4,500 to $5,000.
