The new sheriff of Sedgwick County has survived an attempt by county residents to recall him during his first year in office.
In Julesburg, county clerk Christy Beckman said today that 383 voters favored recalling Sheriff Randy Peck and 585 opposed the recall. The unofficial vote count will be confirmed next week and certified to the state.
“Randy will remain in office,” Beckman said.
Voters in Sedgwick, a farm county at the northeastern corner of Colorado, elected Peck as their new sheriff last November.
Peck’s critics contend there have been too many incidents of excessive force, including a deputy’s beating of a 63-year-old handicapped man after a traffic stop.
The sheriff’s defenders say the recall campaign was led by voters who didn’t like the results of the 2010 election.
