DENVER—A Fruita man has been sentenced to 22 years in prison in the shooting death of his roommate last year.
Thirty-nine-year-old Wayne Gert was sentenced Tuesday. He was convicted earlier this year of second-degree murder, menacing and two counts of possession of explosive or incendiary parts.
Gert has said he acted in self-defense in shooting 37-year-old Henry Trisler Jr. after an argument fueled by hours of drinking alcohol.
The Daily Sentinel reports ( ) Gert’s attorney Steve Colvin said Gert served in the military and had no prior criminal history. Chief Deputy District Attorney Dan Rubinstein countered that after Gert received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army in 2001, Gert more recently spent his monthly disability checks on medical marijuana and alcohol.
