BOULDER, Colo.—The number of senior citizens using the city of Boulder’s food tax rebate program is rising.

The program provides low-income families, seniors, and people with disabilities a rebate on the estimated sales taxes they pay on food.

The Daily Camera reports ( ) the number of seniors participating in the program is up more than 25 percent since 2007. Of the 780 rebate applications approved this year, 475 were for people age 62 or older.

The city’s acting senior services manager Sandy Hollingsworth says Social Security increases have been frozen for years, and some seniors’ incomes haven’t kept up with the cost of living.

Overall, seniors received a total of $33,700 through the program this year, and low-income families got about $33,600. About $10,600 went to people with disabilities.
