FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Farm organizations say Fort Collins relied on faulty information when deciding to phase out city vehicles that run on corn-based ethanol.
The Coloradoan reports ( ) the City Council says it’s looking away from ethanol to compressed natural gas, or hybrid vehicles as a means to reduce the city’s carbon footprint. Council members at a work session last month say that corn-based ethanol has created unsustainable farming practices and has led to water and soil degradation.
The city has about 96 Flex-fuel vehicles that run on gasoline that is 85 percent ethanol.
The Colorado Corn Growers Association, Colorado Farm Bureau and others contradict the city’s assertions. The groups worry that Fort Collins’ move away from ethanol would have a “snowball” effect in influencing other cities not to use corn-based fuel.
