A 23-year-old man whose gun authorities say was used by a 3-year-old boy to accidentally shot and kill his 5-year-old brother in Jefferson County faces criminal charges.

Adam Dean Laham of Wichita, Kan., appeared in court Friday to be advised of a charge of reckless child abuse resulting in death. Laham told police after the shooting last week that what happened was his fault because he left his gun loaded in the children’s game room.

Laham was a houseguest at the Lakewood apartment where the shooting happened and he was not related to the children. The charge carries a penalty of 16 to 48 years in prison if he is convicted.

Laham is being held on $40,000 bail.
