BOULDER, Colo.—No new dispensaries will be allowed to open in Boulder while officials review the city’s medical marijuana regulations.

The city council approved an emergency moratorium on dispensary applications during their meeting on Tuesday night.

The Daily Camera () reports that the request from city attorney Tom Carr was a surprise. He said the moratorium is needed to review unintended consequences of the city’s regulations and to resolve a court case with a dispensary.

The council didn’t discuss the proposal but councilwoman KC Becker noted that there are enough dispensaries in the city to meet demand during the moratorium.

The time-out is in effect until Feb. 8. The council plans to hold a hearing before it ends to decide on whether to enact a longer-term moratorium.
