A highway chase on I-25, with speeds in excess of 100 mph, ended early this morning in northern Colorado with the arrest of the driver who tried to outrun the law.

Richard Maez, 24, was arrested and a passenger in his car, an unidentified woman, was taken into custody, said Trooper Nate Reid, a Colorado State Patrol spokesman.

The incident started at about 11:45 p.m. when a trooper tried to stop a 1999 green Honda on I-25 in Weld County, Reid said.

The driver failed to yield and continued north on the highway.

Speeds reached upward of 100 mph and stop sticks, a device put down on the road to blow out the tires of suspect vehicles, were used to slow the Honda down.

Even with blown out tires, the driver kept going and a pursuing trooper resorted to a “PIT maneuver,” bumping the fleeing car with a patrol car, to bring it to a halt at about 12:05 a.m.

Once the Honda finally came to a stop, the driver was was arrested without further incidence.

Maez is suspected of drinking and driving and will likely face additional charges. He was taken to the Weld County Jail.

His passenger was questioned and released.
