The man who police say carjacked a taxi cab in downtown Denver before he crashed it into a tree in Civic Center remains in the hospital this afternoon.
Officers have yet to interview the man, who appeared to be driving the cab when the accident happened, said Sonny Jackson, spokesman for the Denver Police Department.
His injuries are not life-threatening.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, allegedly stole a Union Taxi mini-van and drove it to the Diamond Shamrock convenience store at 1001 Broadway. The man robbed the store before he led police on a pursuit.
Around 1 a.m., the cab was cruising east on Colfax Avenue before it jumped the curb along the north side of Civic Center, skidded through the park near the water fountain and eventually collided with a tree.
There is no indication that there are any additional suspects, Jackson said.
The driver of the cab scuffled with the suspect near the Ramada Hotel, at 26th Avenue and Zuni Street, said Bill Fawcett, general manager of Union Taxi.
Fawcett said the driver is recovering today and was treated for minor injuries.
There were no additional passengers in the cab when it was stolen.
The driver has worked for Union Taxi for about two years and owns the mini-van.
