Sassy, the 4-year-old male Maine Coon cat, is headed to a new home to Florida this week after he turned up as a stray without tags in Castle Rock recently.

Sassy was a California cat until a year and a half ago when owner Bart Stoltenberg, a service member, and his family were transferred overseas. Sassy was left with a friend, but disappeared a few months later.

At the Dumb Friends League Buddy Center in Castle Rock, Sassy was scanned for a microchip and the Stoltenbergs were located in Florida.

“We couldn’t believe it,” Tami Stoltenberg said in a press release from the league. “When we heard he was found, we were in disbelief.”

The maker of the microchip, HomeAgain, has offered $500 to help Sassy reunite with the Stoltenbergs.

The Dumb Friends League said that nationally fewer than 2 percent of cats are reunited with owners.

The Dumb Friends League microchips every cat and dog it offers for adoption at its shelters.
