ASPEN, Colo.—Pitkin County commissioners are lifting a cap on the number of low-income families eligible for child care assistance.

The board had capped the number of eligible families at 13 in January last year, citing the declining economy for an increase in demand. On Wednesday, the board voted to reverse the policy over concerns for family welfare.

The county health and human services department has estimated 14 to 16 families will be supported through the program this year.

Commissioners adjusted the 2012 budget to add about $27,000 in supplemental funds to the existing $171,000 budget for the program.

Under the program, each family receives an average of $9,800 to cover child care costs.
