DENVER—Colorado is bracing for heavy snow, with blizzard and winter storm warnings issued for a third of the state.

The National Weather Service says northeast Colorado can expect up to 20 inches of snow and sustained winds of up to 30 mph, making travel difficult or impossible from early Friday into early Saturday.

Forecasters say Front Range cities from Colorado Springs to Fort Collins and Greeley could get 12 to 22 inches of snow by Saturday morning.

Up to eight inches of snow could fall in a swath of southern Colorado including Pueblo and Buena Vista.

The forecast prompted Colorado lawmakers to cancel legislative work on Friday. More than 150 arriving and departing flights at the Denver airport have been canceled through Friday.

The highway department is deploying 47 snowplows.
