With red and black ink pads at the ready, Miss Loveland Valentine Mary Askham smiled Thursday morning as she pressed and rolled the first two valentines with the official Loveland cachet.

They were for a 13-year-old Georgia girl and her mother’s parents to be dated Feb. 2, 20 days before her five years free of cancer. Askham stamped another card, then four for two of her aunts and her two sets of grandparents to kick of the city’s annual remailing program.

“It’s great especially to have it prefaced with stories knowing the stamp on the valentine makes it that much more special,” Askham said.

In its 66th year, the remailing program calls on volunteers to hand-stamp a locally designed cupid shooting hearts over a four-line cachet verse on more than 160,000 cards. The valentines are remailed from Loveland with the special postmark to all 50 states and all over the world.
