After clinching the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular-season title last weekend, the Colorado Mines men’s basketball team (22-2, 18-2) moved to No. 1 in the NCAA Division II Central Region rankings.
The top eight teams in the 28-team region will advance to the NCAA regional tournament March 10-13.
In the women’s rankings, Metro State is No. 2 behind Wayne (Neb.) State. Fort Lewis and CSU-Pueblo are 4-5.
DU’s Gwozdecky suspends Olszewski. University of Denver hockey coach George Gwozdecky suspended sophomore forward Dan Olszewski indefinitely from the team for violation of team policy. Olszewski, who was scoreless in nine games this season, will miss at least the rest of the 2011-12 season. Gwozdecky will review Olszew ski’s suspension at the end of the season.
Pioneers’ Grant wins slalom. DU’s Sterling Grant won the women’s slalom at the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association alpine qualifier No. 2 at Bridger Bowl in Bozeman, Mont., and Colorado’s Erika Ghent was fifth. New Mexico’s Armin Triendl won the men’s slalom, and CU’s Max Lamb was third.
DU sweeps 800 free relays. The DU swimming and diving team started the defense of its Sun Belt Conference championship with two wins, by the men’s (Clayton Myers, Jorge Palma, Jay Giddens, Cole Worsley) and women’s (Anna Labozan, Rachel Burns, Bridgette McNally, Drew Matthews) 800-yard freestyle relay teams in Rockwall, Texas.
