COMMERCE CITY — Commerce City police are calling 10-year-old Kali Collins a hero after she dialed 911 and warned authorities her mother had passed out in a moving vehicle.
Kali, her mother, Erin Collins, and Kali’s two 8-year-old sisters were traveling along East 58th Street when Collins had a diabetic reaction that left her unresponsive. Kali’s call for help came at about 2:10 p.m. Sunday when she told officers her mother was driving and would not stop. Authorities tracked down the vehicle in the 5100 block after Kali said they were driving near a Bridgestone store.
The car was traveling west slowly on a blown tire, police said. When Kali saw the officers, she jumped from the passenger-side door and yelled that her mom was sick before hopping back in.
An officer was able to open the driver’s-side door, stop the vehicle and get Erin Collins to a hospital. No one was injured in the incident, and Collins is recovering at home.
Commerce City police gave Kali a “positive ticket,” or a commendation given to young do-gooders that can be redeemed at the Commerce City Recreation Center for a reward. Jessica Fender, The Denver Post
