NIWOT, Colo.—Authorities say pepper spray may have prompted an evacuation at Niwot High School.

The Times-Call reports () the school was evacuated around noon Friday after students and staff reported a strange smell that caused some to cough and report sore throats and irritated eyes.

Boulder County sheriff’s Cmdr. Rick Brough says initial reports indicate that pepper spray was somehow set off.

St. Vrain Valley School District spokesman John Poynton says 22 students and staff had their eyes flushed with water. He says seven people remained outside after firefighters cleared the building to make sure that their reactions were not severe.

Mountain View firefighters decontaminated the building before students returned inside.
