A 20-year-old Silverthorne man is being held on charges of driving under the influence and vehicular homicide after authorities said he hit and killed a pedestrian in Keystone Saturday night.
Wesley Wilson also is charged with possession and consumption of alcohol by a minor, according to Colorado State Patrol Trooper Nate Reid. He is being held at the Summit County Jail.
Reid said Wilson was westbound on Highway 6 at Rasor Drive in a 1999 Subaru Outback when he hit Mircea Basaram, a 33-year-old visitor from Romania, just before 7 p.m.
Basaram was with a group of people who were in the crosswalk trying to walk from the north to the south side of Highway 6, Reid said.
Another vehicle in the right westbound lane of Highway 6 stopped for the group. Wilson, who was in the left lane, did not, Reid said.
The Summit Daily News reported that Basaram was visiting friends in Denver and had been in Keystone to ski for the day. He was flown to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Lakewood, where he was pronounced dead.
The Daily News also reported that the intersection has been a concern for residents and local and state officials because drivers rarely stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk, and that the Colorado Department of Transportation has been studying ways to make the intersection more safe.
