Denver police Monday said they do not believe drugs or alcohol was involved in the accident that killed a jogger in southwest Denver just before noon Sunday.

“We are looking at the possibility of it being a medical issue,” said Sonny Jackson, a Denver Police Department spokesman. “We’ll need additional medical reports to determine that.”

Investigative findings will be sent to the Denver district attorney’s office for review, and prosecutors will determine whether any charges are warranted, Jackson said. It was not clear how long it would take to complete the medical reports.

Hampden Ave. Duarte-Alegria’s vehicle then drove through a backyard fence and smashed into a house at 3545 S. Harlan St., pinning a resident between the vehicle and a refrigerator in the kitchen.

Duarte-Alegria and the resident were transported to a hospital and treated for injuries, police said.

Duarte-Alegria is married to Rowena Alegria, a former Denver Post and Viva Colorado editor.
