A Breckenridge restaurant was evacuated and two people were injured after a can of cooking spray exploded and caused a flash fire Wednesday night.

Around 5:30 p.m., firefighters were called to the Kenosha Steakhouse at 301 S. Main St. after they received a report of an explosion, according to a news release from the Red, White and Blue Fire District.

Restaurant patrons and staff had safely evacuated the restaurant by the time crews arrived. Two employees were injured. They were taken to the hospital in a personal vehicle and treated.

When crews entered the restaurant’s kitchen, two sprinkler heads were running. After searching the building to ensure everyone had safely evacuated, crews turned off the water.

The sprinkler system had extinguished the fire.

The fire appeared to have started after a can of cooking spray heated, expanded and exploded. The highly flammable aerosol spray was pushed out of the can and into an open flame on a stove, causing the flash fire.
