FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Rafters in northern Colorado are worried that drought may dampen this year’s season.
This year, the snowpack that feeds the Cache la Poudre (kash-luh-POO’-der) River was 23 percent of the 30-year average on May 1, and may have peaked on May 5. The season opened Tuesday, and the peak usually occurs in early June.
According to the Fort Collins Coloradoan ( ), rafting company owners are hoping to avoid a repeat of 2002, when wildfires and drought took a major toll on the estimated $50 million commercial rafting industry.
