COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—School officials in Colorado Springs have shut down their lunch loan program for the last few weeks of school and lunches are being thrown away.

According to KKTV-TV (), one mother complained her children were given cheese and a muffin because their lunch accounts ran out of money. School officials say parents were notified last week warning them the loan program was shutting down for the year.

A school official says food safety regulations require them to toss uneaten lunches in the trash.
