COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Copper thieves nearly short-circuited the Territory Days festival commemorating Old Colorado City as the first capitol of the Colorado Territory in 1861.

Organizer Jim Wear says he was shocked to find his extension cords missing from his truck when he went to set up power for the event that begins Saturday. Police say it’s the work of copper thieves.

According to KOAA-TV ( ), Wear had to scramble to replace the cords, which cost $2,000.

Police say there have been more than 50 copper thefts in the past month alone.
