A radio fundraising blitz last week helped get to the $400,000 that will allow completion of the Colorado Freedom Memorial Foundation monument in Springhill Park in Aurora.

Glass panels on the memorial will be etched with the names of more than 6,000 Colorado veterans killed or missing in action since the Spanish-American War, including 102 who died in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The 100-foot-wide memorial, designed by Kristoffer Kenton of SEM Architects in Denver, is planned for a spot directly north of Buckley Air Force Base.

The project was driven by KEZW 1430-AM, which ended its “Freedom Month” campaign with a day-long push Friday to hit the financial goal.

“Friday was the realization of 12 years of dreaming, planning, praying and never letting go of the idea of a memorial to Colorado’s fallen veterans was a good thing,” said station program director and on-air host Rick Crandall. “It’s been great seeing how many people are excited about this dream becoming a reality.”
