A man was fatally shot and a woman was struck in the leg with a bullet early this morning at a Colorado Springs bar in front of hundreds of patrons. A suspect was arrested early this evening.
The names of the victims have not been released pending confirmation of identities and notification of family members.
A man was taken to the Evans Hospital in a private car and was later pronounced dead. There is reason to believe he was an Army soldier at Fort Carson.
The woman was rushed to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, said Lt. Elden Stromer of the Colorado Springs Police Department.
Early this evening, police announced they had arrested 26-year-old Dwight Gordon in connection with the shootings and said he was being charged with first-degree murder.
Colorado Springs police were called about a shooting at the Golden Cue Bar at 2790 Hancock Expressway at 12:38 a.m., Stromer said.
At first the woman’s injury was reported as a knife injury but it was later learned that she, too, had been shot, he said.
When police arrived they learned that the male victim was being taken in a private vehicle to Fort Carson. They called military police, giving a description of the vehicle, and asked the officers to stop the vehicle, Stromer said.
The military officers did so and took the victim to the Evans Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
There were several hundred people in the bar at the time of the shooting, according to a police news release.
Stromer said the Golden Cue Bar is a large facility with pool tables. It also has live band performances, he said.
“It does get quite a bit of police attention,” Stromer said.
Police spokesman Larry Herbert said that a man leaving the bar following the shooting got into a motorcycle accident, but he was not linked to the shooting.
Detectives from the Violent Crimes Unit and patrol officers were interviewing a large number of people at the bar.
