Colorado’s coal production in 2011 was ninth-highest in the nation, moving the state up from 11th place in 2010.
Production was 26.8 million tons, a six percent increase from the previous year, according to the Colorado Mining Association.
Employment at Colorado’s 10 producing coal mines rose 13 percent in 2011 to 2,504. The average wage and benefit package totaled $115,000, the highest among Colorado industrial workers.
