Human remains found in March at the Suncor Energy refinery in Commerce City are “archaeological” remains likely belonging to a Native American, according to the Adams and Broomfield County coroner’s office.

on the west side of the energy company’s property while workers were doing excavation work with high-pressure water hoses. The company called police, which called in the coroner’s office.

At the time, the coroner’s office said the bones had been at the site for some time but probably less than 50 years.

In a news release today, the coroner’s office said the remains “are archaeological, likely Native remains.” Because of the way the remains to arranged — in a jumble, instead of in an anatomical position, the coroner’s office concluded the remains had likely been reburied at the location.

The coroner’s office said the remains will be turned over to the state Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation.
