The Windows program MS Paint has a pretty bad rap in comparison to, you know, Photoshop, but famed Beatle Ringo Starr is still busy clicking away with the “Fill With Color” button.
Starr has been um, drawing, with the program since the mid-’90s. His latest collection, “Ringo 2012” is currently on display at through June 25 at in New York City.
The exhibition includes screen prints with incredibly accurate titles. Some past gems include, “Big Close Up,” “Green Man” and a personal favorite, “Elephant Foot,” which is just, you guessed it, a close up on a grey squiggly rectangle rivaling any 5-year-old’s gold star fridge display. “Ringo 2012” is the star’s fifth go-round on the art scene since he first put out his Paint creations in 2005.
Each piece is up for sale in the range of roughly $2,000, .
Starr’s work is reminiscent of the early 1900s art movement known as Fauvism, where subjects were simplified and colors were mixed-up — not true to life. Most of the vibrant pop art features faces and, big surprise here, stars.
On his website, , Starr comments on the idea of pop art, saying, “In its way pop art is always changing, like pop artists. Itap a natural move of things like pop music, and even Popeye the sailor man.”
Sure Ringo. Maybe fans can expect some close up green blobs, er, spinach, soon.
The less-than-complex medium does help the pieces convey a comedic, juvenile sensibility. A portion of the proceeds from the art show go to benefit the star’s charity, –Kelsey Fowler
